How to Upgrade Your Irrigation System for Real Water Savings

Colorado's semi-arid climate and increasingly strict water restrictions make one thing clear: an outdated irrigation system is costing you money every time it runs. The right irrigation upgrades deliver water savings that pay back your investment faster than most homeowners expect.

Start with a Smart Controller

The single biggest upgrade you can make is replacing a timer-based controller with a smart, weather-responsive controller. Old timers run on a fixed schedule regardless of rainfall, soil saturation, or temperature. Smart controllers pull in real-time weather data and adjust run times automatically. In the dry months along the Front Range, that difference adds up fast.

Most of our customers see a 20 to 30 percent reduction in water usage after a controller swap alone. The units themselves typically run $150 to $350 installed. If you are paying for municipal water in Longmont, Fort Collins, or Boulder, that kind of savings closes the gap on the upgrade cost within one or two seasons.

One thing most homeowners do not know: many local water districts offer rebates for smart controller installations. Check with your provider before you buy. That rebate alone can cover a third of the cost.

Fix the Inefficiencies That Are Already There

A smart controller on a broken system is still a broken system. Before any upgrade pays off, the existing system needs to be audited. We look for head misalignment, clogged nozzles, pressure problems, and spray patterns hitting pavement instead of turf. These issues are everywhere, especially on systems that have been in the ground for more than eight years.

Replacing standard spray heads with high-efficiency rotary nozzles is another upgrade worth making. Rotary nozzles apply water more slowly, which reduces runoff on Colorado's clay-heavy soils. Water applied faster than the soil absorbs it runs off the property entirely. That is money in the gutter, literally.

If your property has drip zones for shrubs or garden beds, check emitter condition and flow rates. Drip systems degrade over time. A single failed emitter can flood a root zone or leave a plant dry for weeks without any visible sign until the damage is done.

Add Flow Monitoring and Shut-Off Protection

Flow sensors are the upgrade most people skip, and they are often the most valuable one on the list. A flow sensor monitors water moving through the system and alerts you to anomalies. A broken lateral line in a Colorado winter or a head snapped off by a mower can run hundreds of gallons before anyone notices. A flow sensor cuts the system off automatically when flow goes outside the expected range.

Paired with a smart controller, flow monitoring gives you real visibility into what the system is actually doing. Our sprinkler team has caught underground leaks on properties in Longmont and the surrounding area that had been running silently for years. The water waste on those properties was significant. You can learn more about how we approach these issues through our irrigation and sprinkler services.

A well-executed set of irrigation upgrades reduces water use, lowers your utility bills, and protects the landscape investment you have already made. The payback timeline is real, and in a state where water costs are only going up, doing nothing is the most expensive option on the table.
